We said good-bye to our little Max yesterday. He was the last of what my friend Kathy called our “three Amigos” when we had Max, Charlie and Mickey, our three darling white rescue dogs. What an amazing life we shared with these three pups, whom we loved so much. Max was the youngest and the toughest to win over, because all he ever needed was Charlie. I can still see the two of them shut inside a kennel at the animal shelter, Max digging ferociously at the metal floor, trying to make a nest of the blanket. From that moment he won my heart, and I took Max and Charlie home that same day. It was almost an entire year before Max learned to enjoy being petted and handled, having been so isolated and neglected when the shelter rescued them. We spent the next fifteen years loving him and giving him the best life.
